One of Dr. Bob Jones' “Ten Things to Remember,” was “You don’t find happiness looking for it. You stumble over it on the road of duty.”

Happiness is not a goal to be achieved, but a  serendipity: a "faculty or phenomenon of finding valuable or agreeable things NOT sought for." (The Merriam Webster dictionary.)

The Scriptures have much to say about acquiring happiness, but none of its verses have anything to do with searching for happiness. They all have to do with finding happiness in doing other things.

Psalm 144:15, for instance, says, “happy is that people, whose God is the LORD.” Having a right relationship with the Lord brings happiness.

Proverbs 3:13 tells us that, “Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.”

Proverbs 4:7 states that “Wisdom is the principal thing: Therefore, get wisdom." Getting wisdom bring with it, happiness.

Proverbs 16:20 tells us that trusting the Lord brings happiness.

Keeping God's Law brings us happiness, according to Proverbs 29:18.

And we could go on and on with many more Biblical examples of this truth, but just one more: Psalm 128:2 states, “For thou shalt eat the labor of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee.” Laboring with your own hand to supply your personal needs brings a happiness that is not found any other way.  It’s that road of DUTY of which Dr. Bob spoke.

The wisest man to ever live summed up man's duty by saying in Ecclesiastes12:13, “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.” Our duty as believers is to follow the Lord every step of the way, and the serendipity of doing that brings us happiness.

If you want to be happy in this life and the next, follow the admonition of Psalm 1:1-3 “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper."

This is truly the road to happiness.
