The greatest act of love is letting go. Even if it means drowning in darkness, if it is by guiding the child towards the light that you save them. This is illustrated continually through life’s great tragedies and sorrows. Why would a parent let go of a precious child, we ask. But there in Lk. 15 is the most telling example of this: a son bored with life and a father crying himself to sleep in concern for his prodigal son. Even there the story has a happy ending.

​We Christians need not speculate about life on other planets or exactly how far this galaxy is from the next one. We need not ponder over the questions that baffle scientists who earnestly seek to recalibrate the facts of reality with their evolutionary mythology. We do not turn to religion to solve the mysteries of life and existence – we turn to Jesus. We look to Immanuel, “God with us.”
