“Is anything too hard for the Lord?” (Genesis 18:14a)
God asked that question to Abraham after God had just repeated the promise that Sarah would give birth when she was ninety and Abaham was one hundred. The polite expression of the King James is that “it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women” (Genesis 18:11). Give birth? No way. God has power, however, above the natural order, so she gave birth to Isaac as God had promised.
Nothing is too hard for the Lord.
The nation of Israel would produce kings, prophets, priests, warriors, and the promised Messiah. If Israel were destroyed, God’s plan would be thwarted, right? Right–if anything were too hard for the Lord. When Isaac was one knife thrust away from ending the line of Israel, the Lord provided the ram for an offering in place of Isaac (Genesis 22).
Nothing is too hard for the Lord.
Ancient Persia’s policy was that no law could be reversed once enacted by their king. Ahasuerus commanded that all Jews in the kingdom be destroyed, and he sealed it into law never to be undone. Israel–and later the birth of Christ–were erased, right? Right–if anything were too hard for the Lord. That same God moved to rescue Israel and reverse the irreversible law of the Persians (Esther 9).
Nothing is too hard for the Lord.
Nineveh’s evil had reached its zenith. God was about to destroy her for her sins, but He raised up Jonah to preach a warning so the people of Nineveh could be spared. Jonah’s self-righteousness prompted him to run the other way in disobedience to God. Nineveh was hopeless, right? Right–if anything were too hard for the Lord. God arranged for the great fish to swallow the renegade prophet and send Jonah back to Nineveh with hope (Jonah 3,4).
Nothing is too hard for the Lord.
One day, the disciples of Jesus forsook him and fled (Matthew 26:56). Later, the sinless Jesus died on a cross and was laid in a tomb. Those who conspired to kill him must have celebrated. The devil and his cohorts must have held their breath. The needy world was doomed, right? Right–if anything were too hard for the Lord. But the God of glory raised His precious Son back to life and secured eternal life for all who would believe.
Nothing is too hard for the Lord.
Your plans are blocked, or your health is fading, or your job is a wreck, or your family is broken, or everything is upside down. Sin defeats you too often. You might as well give up, right? Right–if anything were too hard for the Lord. He knows the very hairs of your head, your very thoughts from far away, and He loves you with a perfect love forever. You can trust Him.
Nothing…nothing…NOTHING is too hard for the Lord.
