1 Chronicles 20: 4-6 "And it came to pass after this, that there arose war at Gezer with the Philistines; at which time Sibbechai the Hushathite slew Sippai that was of the children of the giant: and they were subdued. And there was war again with the Philistines; and Elhanan the son of Jair slew Lahmi the brother of Goliath the Gittite, whose spear staff was like a weaver's beam. And yet again there was war at Gath, where was a man of great stature, whose fingers and toes were four and twenty, six on each hand, and six on each foot: and he also was the son of the giant."
When David was a young man full of youthful strength, he took on Goliath the Gittite and overcame him. Goliath had four brothers which is why David picked up five stones. He was prepared, but he did not meet those brothers that day in his youth. In 1 Chronicles 20:4-8, David is much older and his physical strength much less. When the giants came back years later, he needed help. The Scriptures says, "These were born unto the giant in Gath; and they fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants."
The point here is simple. There are battles in life God chooses for us to handle by just God and ourselves. There are battles that come our way that God chooses for us to need the help of others. When the Lord God sends you helpers, don't be too proud to step aside and let them do what God sends them to do. We must not allow pride to cloud our willingness to stand back and let God’s plan work on our behalf.
In his youth David stood up alone to fight battles with the help of God. But later in life, there came battles that he no longer had the physical or mental strength to fight without the help of others. In those moments, God sent him helpers to face the new giants in his life. It is to David's credit that he was wise enough to see the truth of the situation. David, through the power of God, was able to conquer Goliath the Gittite alone; but he needed help to overcome Goliath’s four brothers in later years.
As I move ever closer to my eightieth year of life, I realize that I can no longer physically do as easily the things I once could do by myself. Spiritual battles are much the same. We must welcome the help God sends our way. When spiritual battles come our way, may we be wise enough to open our arms and hearts to the needed help God sends.
