Romans 3:3-4 “For what if some did not believe? Shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect? God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, “That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged."
Romans 10:17 “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
Have you ever thought about why atheists spend so much time trying to prove the Bible is not the inherent Word of God? I have. They do not attack the Koran, the Book of Mormon, or the writings of far eastern religions. It's only the Bible and Christianity they attack with all the intellectual venom they can pour out. Why?
The other day I saw a website called, "Lies of the Bible," an all-out attack on the truthfulness of the Word of God. Again, I ask, why? And what prompts the unabated attacks on Christians calling us hate-mongers, unloving, uncaring, and many other such evil things? Why do they hate us so much? The simple unpremeditated truth is, it’s not us, it’s God they hate. It's God they're really after. To preserve their own feelings of correctness and their unsupported beliefs, they must set out to prove God and His Book are false.
If one wishes to believe he or she can live their lives by their own rules-- and be their own god--they must, without question, disprove the one True God. They must find a way to justify their lifestyles to feel good about themselves. Christians who are living according to God's ways are living proof that athiests are wrong, who then feel they must argue to disprove the truth of God’s Word. They are battling God and their hatred of God means they must attack God’s people.
But they face a major challenge. The God of the Bible, the Creator of all things, consistently points out that their lifestyles are inherently sinful. And when they read the Bible looking for errors, they are confronted with a truth that undermines their very beliefs: “So, then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Every time they start their intellectual study of the Bible to find fault, they are confronted with truth. And it is the Word of God that grows faith in the human heart. This confrontation with the truth of the Word of God and the reality that the athiest might be wrong, can bring him an inner fear and a hatred of God, especially when God's Word says, “Let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written." At the very heart of the atheist’s attack on God and the Bible is a fear of being wrong. “But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.” Hebrews 10:27.
Ultimately, then, the athiest is not trying to convince you and others; he is trying to convince himself that there is no God. But according to the truth of Scripture, he is emphatically wrong in his views that God, Heaven, and Hell do not exist. Thus God calls him a fool: “The fool hath said in his heart, ’There is no God.” Psalms 14:1. The day is coming, and is growing ever closer, when every knee shall bow before God and confess that Jesus is Lord.
But the foolish do not fear the living God, the Great I Am. They should, for Scripture tells us to “fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Matthew 10:25. The very God they spend their lives denying will one day sit in judgment over their foolish hearts and lives. Sadly, on that day, the God of mercy, love and grace, shall, according to Psalm 2:4-5, “...speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in His sore displeasure.” The sad truth is that their life-long quest to prove to themselves that there is no God will end in complete despair and disappointment in an eternity of never-ending torment without comparison or compassion.
Only a fool would say, "no" to God. And only a fool would go after God.
