Presumptuous Sins

Presumptuous Sins

Devotionals

Psalms 19:13 “Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression.”

When we say someone is presumptuous, we mean that they are overconfident or act rudely or inappropriately. In other words, a presumptuous person takes liberties in their actions, words, or assumptions. The Hebrew word used here is "zed" pronounced “Zade” which means arrogant or proud. The application here is, as David prayed, keep me from being arrogant in sinning, and taking for granted that either God will not see or care. After all, He is loving and forgiving, and that is what 1 John 1:9 is all about, is it not?

But the sin here is greater than we think. Presumptuous sin is committed without sorrow or repentance and with no intention of ever stopping. It is a sin committed with malice and forethought. It is a sin entered into deliberately and purposefully with the presumption that it will be all right with God. How arrogant can one be to presume on the goodness of God while committing wickedness? Or thinking that God would allow us to live in willful sin, and presumptuously to believe that God would be ok with it? In order for sin to be forgiven, it must be repented of. We must then see that sin, once confessed, as abandoned.

Seek God’s forgiveness in faith through the blood of Jesus, for “the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.” (1 John 1:7b.) David sought God to keep him from presumptuous sin beecause he was well aware of his heart’s wickedness and the sins he was capable of. We are no different from David in that regard. And like him, let us cry out to God, “Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins.”
