1 Corinthians 6:12 “All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.”

Those who have known me for awhile know that four or five years ago I weighed over three hundred plus pounds which was far too much for my 5’9” body to carry. Due to a series of very serious illnesses I lost one hundred and twenty-five pounds and now weigh one-hundred and sixty-five pounds. I determined not to gain the weight back. Food, if not controlled, can control you. As the Apostle Paul said “ All things are lawful unto me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.” One thing I decided to do was weigh myself every morning and I continue to do so. The reason was to keep from gaining the weight back. Any upward change in my weight would be met with a decrease in the food I would eat that day since it's easier to loss one pound than ten.

The same attitude is true in our spiritual walk. Big sins will not control your life if you deal with the little ones along the way. Little sins become bigger if we ignore them, or worse, deny them. “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” I John 1:8. If we allow any sin, even a seemingly small one, into our lives, it will not remain little or alone. That one pound gained will gain another if not dealt with.

It's like the old folk proverb: “O the tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive.” A sin in our lives not dealt with will become a tightly woven web. Confession and repentance is more than just good for your soul, it is the wall that safe guards you soul. 1 John 1:9 makes that perfectly clear, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

In much the same way as my stepping on the scale each morning to help me keep extra weight off, is the exercise of daily examining ourselves to see "whether ye be in the faith; prov(ing) your own selves.” 2 Corinthians 13:5. It must be a daily activity. Obviously keeping weight off requires more than just weighing in every morning. It requires a change in eating habits and exercise.

Keeping sin out of our lives requires daily Bible study, prayer, examination, repentance, and confession. Daily "weighing in" is the starting point spiritually if we are to keep sin from controlling our Christian lives. To keep the weight of sin off, step on the spiritual scales everyday.
