A Tragedy Prevented

Devotionals

Galatians 6:1 “Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.”

An emotionally disturbed college student went to the dresser in his drab room and opened a drawer where he had hidden a revolver beneath his socks and underclothes. Intent on taking his life, he frantically searched for the gun. Miraculously a cartoon printed on a newspaper lining the bottom of the drawer caught his eye. Out of curiosity, the student read the caption and Bible verse on the religious cartoon, drawn by Jack Hamm, the well-known artist from Dallas, Texas. Later the student told a friend, “The inspirational message of the drawing and the Bible verse prevented me from carrying out my fixed purpose to take my life.” In commenting upon the incident, Hamm said, “ I never found out which one of my drawings the student saw, but his friend told me it contained a Scripture that really meant something to him at that dark moment.”

How little it often takes to convert a “sinner from the error of his way and save a soul from death.” A kind word of encouragement, a gentle hand laid on a troubled brow, a willingness to enter sparingly and understanding into the heartaches and heartbreaks of others, how important! Giving our love and compassion "later," may be too late.

Proverbs 25:11 “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.”

Many are waiting for a kind, loving word. Help somebody today!
Thou hast a message, O let it be heard--Help somebody today!
Many have burdens too heavy to bear, Help somebody today!
Grief is the portion of some everywhere, Help somebody today!
