"When a man's ways please the Lord, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him." Prov. 16:7
2 Chronicles 17:3-11 "And the Lord was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the first ways of his father David, and sought not unto Baalim; But sought to the Lord God of his father, and walked in his commandments, and not after the doings of Israel. Therefore, the Lord stablished the kingdom in his hand; and all Judah brought to Jehoshaphat presents; and he had riches and honour in abundance. And his heart was lifted up in the ways of the Lord: moreover, he took away the high places and groves out of Judah. Also, in the third year of his reign he sent to his princes, even to Benhail, and to Obadiah, and to Zechariah, and to Nethaneel, and to Michaiah, to teach in the cities of Judah. And with them he sent Levites, even Shemaiah, and Nethaniah, and Zebadiah, and Asahel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehonathan, and Adonijah, and Tobijah, and Tobadonijah, Levites; and with them Elishama and Jehoram, priests. And they taught in Judah and had the book of the law of the Lord with them, and went about throughout all the cities of Judah, and taught the people. And the fear of the Lord fell upon all the kingdoms of the lands that were round about Judah, so that they made no war against Jehoshaphat. Also’ some of the Philistines brought Jehoshaphat presents, and tribute silver; and the Arabians brought him flocks, seven thousand and seven hundred rams, and seven thousand and seven hundred he goats."
The character of King David was the standard by which Israel's and Judah's kings were judged. And Jehoshaphat measured up to David. He was not only a good man, but he "did good" for his people and nation. He did not follow the example of wicked Ahab by seeking after Balam. Unlike the kings of Israel, Jehoshaphat observed with scrupulous fidelity the laws given by Moses and abhorred the unlawful calf-worship that now formed the established religion in Israel. He was full of faith, piety, zeal, and courage, and undertook to suppress idolatry and encourage the pure worship of God. Because Jehoshaphat’s ways were pleasing to God, he had peace in the land. The Word of God was taught throughout the land by the Levites and priests and even his enemies, the Philistines, sent presents and tribute.
When we walk in the law of the Lord, God’s blessings are our reward. “When a man’s ways please the Lord, He maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him.” Proverbs 16:7. Because the king was walking with the Lord, the fear of the Lord filled the nation and the country round about Judah. This truth can give us comfort in the hard times of life. Our peace and our comfort are in the hands of the Lord and He makes even our enemies to be at peace with us. Let us remember that God watches over His Children and blesses them with peace.
